Dry Eye Clinic

title

Tirupati Eye Centre has a superspecailized dry eye clinic.

Dry eye syndrome is a very common disease affecting people, incidence ranging from 17-54%. Current lifestyle including long working on screens, direct exposure to air conditioning, artificial lights, air pollution, wearing contact lenses etc, make dry eye syndrome more and more common. There are several other causes like, ageing, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, medications like antiallergics, antihypertensive, anti-depressives etc.

Tear film has 3 layers: -

  1. The mucous layer, in contact with the ocular globe, secreted by the conjunctival mucous cells.
  2. The aqueous layer, secreted by the lacrimal glands on upper lid
  3. The lipid layer, secreted by the meibomian glands on both lids

Current treatment protocol demand that we first find out the layer of tear affected and study the eyelids and then customize a treatment. For studying the layers and lids at Tirupati Eye Centre we do an advanced investigation with an equipment called IDRA which detects the level of abnormality in the tear film.

After this we give treatment in 1 of the following forms: -

  • Eye drops
  • IRPL (intense regulated light therapy)
  • Punctal plugs
  • Amniotic membrane transplantation

Intense regulated light therapy (IRPL)

At Tirupati Eye Centre we use the advances IRPL E-Eye therapy to trat dry eye due to Meibomian gland dysfunction when we detect this with IDRA as the cause of dry eye.
The “E-Eye” is a device that generates a pulsed light called intense regulated light by producing perfectly calibrated and homogenously sequenced light pulses which stimulate the meibomian glands in order for them to return to their normal function.

  • The session treatment only takes a few minutes.
  • Patients are comfortably seated on a treatment chair.
  • The metal eyewear protection if positioned over the patient’s eyes.
  • Then optical gel is applied on the cheekbone and the temporal areas.
  • A series of 5 flashes are applied under one eye, starting from near the inner side of the eye to the outer area of the lower eyelid, using the nominal power.
  • The same process is then repeated under the other eye.

The stimulation leads to the meibomian glands returning to their normal function in a very short time (a couple of hours) following the treatment.
The full success of treatment depends on the compliance with a specific protocol. The protocol consists of 3 sessions as follows:

  • Day 1
  • Day 15
  • Day 45
  • Day 75 (optional)

The efficiency is nearly constant on all forms of meibomian gland dysfunction.  And is a wonder treatment for dry eye. Several patients have benefitted from this treatment.
