Eligibility Criteria: The Candidate should be an ophthalmologist doing cataract or other surgeries and interest in starting basic vitrectomy surgeries

Need for this training

All surgeons need to know how to do vitrectomy. Anterior segment surgeons need to learn this to be able to handly simpler cases as well their retinal complications like posterior capsular rents, nucleaus drop and subluxated/dislocated IOLs. Theeyo simpler cases like vitreous haemorrhage, no resolving vitritis or core vitrectomy for endophthalmitis. This course would be helpful to them for carrying out this procedure. Those interested in becoming posterior segment surgeons can start basic steps and simpler vitrectomies with this short term course and then plan further for a long term training. This Short Term Training in Vitrectomy which is the first of its kind in Asia. The main objective of this training program is to fine tune the candidates in pars plana vitrectomy surgery as well as the maintenance of the vitrectomy machine.

Training facilities:

1.Wet lab for performing vitrectomies
2.DORC Associate 6000 vitrectomy machine for carrying out 20 and 23 gauge vitrectomies
3.Library
• Reference books on vitrectomy
• Videos, CDs and DVDs on vitrectomy surgeries will be provided to the candidates
• Audio Visuals on vitrectomy procedures
4.Teaching curriculum
The course is designed to ensure that the candidate gains proficiency in
• Training in basic technique of vitrectomy
• Training in the maintenance of the vitrectomy machine.

Course Duration – 10 days

Course Schedule

This training programme is divided into two sections as follows:
• First session: Observation/Second Assistant in Retina Operation theatre
• Second session: Wet lab and carrying out actual vitrectomy procedures

Didactic lectures will be on the following
• Vitreoretinal surgical anatomy
• Instrumentation including vitrectomy machine
• Sterilisation techniques
• Visualisation techniques during vitrectomy
• Basic surgical techniques in vitrectomy
• Management of Endophthalmitis
